Langley5 milesThis fourth route option is basically an extended version of the third route. The park has lovely, wide open spaces which are great if you want to bring along some sporting equipment. If you help out with opening and closing the lock, you may even get invited aboard! Refreshments: The Hollybush, Redbourn The Cricketers, Redbourn, Hertfordshire, Redbourn5.75 milesThis third route is a completely different type of walk to the others and it instead heads out to the north of Redbourn. There is a little bit of woodland and a picnic site to enjoy at the start, but then the walk basically takes you on a long sweeping downhill walk along the Icknield Way Trail that gives you great views of the wonderful Lavender Farm. There are some good waymarked circular walks ranging from 1 to 8 miles to explore (although buggies and prams aren't recommended, so leave teeny tinies at home). Walk 116: Frithsden NW Loop - 5.9 miles (9.5 km) This is an excellent walk which mixes woodland, hills, valleys, cute hamlets, and open views across the undulating Hertfordshire countryside. You'll enjoy a stroll alongside the winding River Ash, lots of open countryside with sweeping views, a walk through the impressive Easneye Wood and a walk around the village of Warerside with it's two lovely pubs. Refreshments: The Boot, Dane End. It is a 7 mile disused train line (Harpenden to Hemel Hempstead Railway) that has been converted into a public footpath. Gaddesden Estate Circular Walk: 95 Reviews, Map - Hertfordshire It was muddy on the trails today as you would expect after the huge amounts of rain we have had the last couple of days. However, this option extends that route and also heads further to the north to follow the footpath through the gorgeous Woodhall Park where the Heath Mount School is located, and then heads back to join the second route along a quiet country lane. You'll also emerge out onto a clearing overlooking the dramatic entrance to the tunnel itself deep in the woods at one point, making the adventure even more fun. The extra distance takes you through some more arable farmland and walks along part of the Hertfordshire Way, so it doesn't add much variety. The highlight for the kids was being able to walk through the large field of Longhorn cattle (watch out for the many cowpats!). Family friendly walks in Hertfordshire: near Welwyn, Stevenage and I am not recommending this trail because children can shout to you to leave or dogs can chasing you. This option doesn't visit the Henry Moore site like the second route, but it is a more varied adventure overall as is has a nice combination of woodland walking through Mill Wood, open countryside walking over Barrow Hill with nice views and waterside walking alongside the River Ash. There is a caf (Inn on the Park) and toilets at the far end of the lake from the car park. It then heads west through more nice open countryside until you reach a fantastic county pub for some well-earned refreshments about two thirds of the way around the route. There are also walking loops off the Nickey Line that take you to Rothampsted Park and Rothampsted Estate if you prefer more of a circular walk. Jockey End1.75 milesThis first route option is a short and relatively flat ramble in the countryside around the village of Jockey End. However, there are three fabulous country pubs across the villages on the route for well-earned pit stops as you go. Nice woodlands, best to stay on dedicated tracks, some of the paths are very overgrown. Family friendly and buggy friendly walk in Hertfordshire As a number of Hertfordshire friends have asked me to recommend a buggy-friendly walk, I thought I'd write up this circular amble along the country lanes and tracks of Watton at Stone, near Hertford. The park has been rated as one of the UK's best kept secrets according to a national survey. The extra distance however, takes you on a long walk along the Back Lane Roman track and then loops around on the Chain walk route back towards Cottered. There's a fair amount of climbing involved as half way around the walk you will descend down into the River Gade valley to visit the village of Great Gaddesden and stroll alongside the river. The route map of the Foresters' Walk at Ashridge We actually slightly deviated from the marked route. It then heads back through various woodlands and more pretty countryside to the start point in Tewin where there is a another pub if you need more refreshments. Length: 4.6 mi Est. Very muddy in places not a difficult walk but still enjoyable and easy to follow. It covers an area of over 27 hectares and consists of walking/biking paths, a football pitch, wildlife areas, tennis courts, a children's play area and an outdoor gym for adults. We took a short-cut that skipped the busiest part of the route that goes around Meadleys Meadow. Langley4.5 milesThings get a lot more interesting on this third route option, if you have that extra time that you need. There is a reasonably sized car park at Verulamium but this can get really busy at the weekend. It's a less varied walk, but great for exercise and fresh air. You can walk along sections of it in Cassiobury Park in Watford, the towpath in Berkhamstead and Tring Park. However, after enjoying the woodland walking, the route also ventures off much further north, out of the woods, towards Hertford Heath and Little Amwell, where you'll find a lovely pub and pretty church. Hertfordshire is a lovely part of the UK with the Chiltern Hills, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, running along the western fringes of county. You'll then work your way back to Buntingford in a big loop through more beautiful Hertfordshire countryside. It enjoys the park, woodland and river from the first walk, but it also heads further south through open countryside until it loops around one of the Willow Lakes and then takes you back along a stretch of the Watling Chase Timberland trail. It is run by the Woodland Trust and at over 850 acres it is the largest uninterrupted woodland area in England making it one of the best Hertfordshire forest walks. Aldbury2.5 milesThis first route is a lovely short, but hilly, walk from the pretty village of Aldbury, Hertfordshire. However, the main reason to choose this route is it visits the Tewin Bury Farm where you'll find a nice farm shop and various restaurants and cafes. You still climb up into the beautiful Ashridge Estate, but this option takes you deeper into the majestic woodlands here and you'll enjoy a walk along the impressive Prince's Riding avenue of trees. William Ford (Henry's brother) built this home for his daughter and her family in 1909. After a short stroll through a residential area, you'll then embark on a nice countryside loop that crosses a pretty bridge over the River Mimram, and then climbs up a steep hill towards Harmer Green. In the summer there is a fantastic splash park and usually an ice cream truck hanging around. It's a lot of exercise, but you'll have some nice views and there is a lovely pub at the end of the walk for a post-exercise reward. Nice walk, but I wouldn't advise trying at this time of year.
